OCMCO 2025 | Bridging oceans with ink and voice: Overseas Chinese media tour of Hunan begins

(U.S. Commerce News – Changsha, China)With camera lenses poised and notebooks in hand, dozens of overseas Chinese media professionals gathered today (Aug. 26) in Changsha for the official launch of the 2025 Global Chinese Media Tour of Hunan, themed “2025 Large-scale Interview Activity for Global Chinese Media Executives in Hunan.”

A special highlight of the tour is the “Global Chinese Media Co-Creation Photography Project”, in which 84 Chinese-language media outlets from around the world will each capture one photo that best represents their vision of “the most beautiful Hunan.” These images will be published globally — across five continents — through the distribution networks of Ta Kung Wen Wei Media Group and the Global Chinese Media Cooperation Organization, bringing Hunan’s story to audiences worldwide.

In his keynote remarks, Zhao Chengxin, Deputy Director-General of the Publicity Department of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and Director of the Hunan Provincial Information Office, emphasized that Hunan has been vigorously implementing President Xi Jinping’s important directives on the province’s development.

Hunan has rolled out a series of major reform and innovation strategies, with a focus on building Changsha into a global R&D center. As of May 2025, Changsha is home to 3,823 R&D institutions, nearly doubling since September 2023. The number of national-level innovation platforms has grown by 25% to 152, and the city has climbed to 23rd in the global rankings for scientific research cities, up 11 places from the previous year. It also ranks 9th among innovation-driven cities nationwide, marking its best performance to date.

Zhao noted that overseas Chinese-language media serve as vital communicators and connectors:

“You are bridges linking China and the world, and you are platforms that help share Hunan’s story with global audiences,” he said. “Through this tour, we hope you’ll use your international perspective and storytelling skills to vividly capture Hunan’s transformation into a global innovation hub and a youth entrepreneurship center.”

Li Dahong, Chairman of the Oversea Chinese Media Cooperation Organization (OCMCO) and Chairman & Editor-in-Chief of Ta Kung Wen Wei Media Group, also delivered a passionate address at the ceremony. He emphasized the organization’s commitment to uniting its member outlets to tell the story of China’s rise and its growing interconnection with the world.

He proposed three key missions for overseas Chinese media in the new era:

  • Preserve tradition and innovate communication — making the telling of China’s story a shared responsibility.
  • Promote development through collaboration — expanding channels for mutual understanding between civilizations.
  • Seek harmony in diversity — helping to realize the vision of a shared future for humanity.

Li also reflected on this year’s 80th anniversary of the end of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the global victory over fascism. He noted that overseas Chinese media played a crucial role in broadcasting China’s voice during that perilous time, and that now, a new generation of media professionals must pick up the torch.

“We must continue to protect red memories, pass on the spirit of resistance, and tell the world about China’s respect for history and its love for peace — using fresh narratives and innovative formats that resonate with younger audiences,” he said.

Li announced that the Hunan tour would serve as a new starting point for deeper collaboration between the Global Chinese Media Cooperation Organization, the Ta Kung Wen Wei Media Group, and the province of Hunan. The aim: to amplify Hunan’s voice on the global stage and ensure that every story from China can cross mountains and oceans to reach the world.

Throughout the week-long tour, from August 26 to 30, a delegation of 120 overseas Chinese media representatives will travel across Changsha, Yueyang, and Zhangjiajie. Through field visits, interviews, and immersive experiences, they will explore Hunan’s economic development, cultural heritage, and local innovations — all while bringing their stories back to Chinese communities abroad.

The tour is jointly organized by the Publicity Department of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee, the Global Chinese Media Cooperation Organization, and Hong Kong Ta Kung Wen Wei Media Group.

At the opening ceremony, Zhao Chengxin officially presented the delegation flag to the media team, symbolizing the beginning of a collective journey of storytelling, cultural dialogue, and global connection.
