U.S. air travel hits new high since the epidemic, passenger traffic rebounds to 2 million

On Friday, American Airlines’ passenger traffic reached its highest level in nearly 15 months. Due to the gradual loosening of passenger restrictions and the continuous expansion of the scope of vaccination, the number of air passengers has surged on the approach of Memorial Day.

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration reported that it screened nearly 1.96 million people at airports, compared with 1.85 million on Thursday. This is the highest level of passenger traffic since the beginning of the new crown pneumonia pandemic on March 7, 2020.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention relaxed this month’s guidance on wearing masks in public, saying that people who are fully vaccinated can usually not wear masks. It is recommended that you still wear a mask when flying or taking public transportation.

Although the number of passengers on airlines has not yet reached the pre-pandemic level, it has improved a lot this year. Data on the agency’s website shows that the average number of people passing through the Transportation Security Administration checkpoint during the Memorial Day weekend last year was slightly more than 300,000.

This year, the increasing number of passengers has boosted aviation stocks. Moody’s raised the credit outlook for municipal bonds issued on behalf of US airports this month.
