The production ‘Sumeru’ presented by Guangdong Modern Dance Company was staged in both Paris and Lisbon on May 28th and June 1st respectively.

Buddhism teaches that something as tiny as a seed can reveal all the wonders of the universe. Dance may similarly reveal a whole world of intriguing stories to those who look closely. ‘Sumeru’, choreographed by Liu Qi, is a game of physical interactions, gradually disclosing a world full of delicate, layered and ever changing connections and relationships through the dancers’ fluid and expressive movements.

About 1000 people attended the performance in Lisbon. Samuel Rego, director of Portugal’s OPArt said the dance was a great success, that he personally had an emotional response to it, and that he hopes to see more of this kind of art coming out of the East.

The dance formed part of the cultural exchange project celebrating both the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France and the 40th anniversary of China-Portugal relations, as well as forming part of the 2019 China Tourism and Culture Week being held in over 40 countries.
