Guangdong confirms 1st death, and takes measures to support companies

Guangdong reported 16 new cases, raising the total number to 1034 as of midday February 7th. The province reported the first death, a 55 year-old male from Zhaoqing, a city in the west of Guangdong, according to the province’s 13th press conference regarding the fight against the coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

At the press conference, Ge Changwei, Director General of Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission, introduced a series of measures including rental reductions or exemptions and financial support to help enterprises better resume production and reduce the impact of the coronavirus epidemic.

Taking effect for 3 months starting yesterday

According to Ge, these measures are now in effect for three months starting February 6th. At the same time, any policies issued by the province work in correlation with policies issued at country and city level.

A 55 year-old male from Zhaoqing

According to the release, the first death was a 55-year-old male with long-term diabetes who had been in contact with people that returned from Wuhan. He was hospitalized on February 2nd for having a fever and slight asthmatic symptoms, and was later confirmed to have developed pneumonia as a result of the novel coronavirus. He died on February 6th despite treatment. Related medical staff and about 60 people who had been in close contact are in isolation and under observation.

According to the latest research from the South China Agricultural University, pangolins may be the potential secondary hosts of the novel coronavirus.
